What is NASAB?

NASAB is a digital family tree system that lets you record family members across generations, keep photographs and heritage documents, share family stories, and tie it all together with a family QR code.

Is this system free?

Yes. The Free plan stays free forever with 10 MB of storage, a family QR code, family chat and a three-generation family tree โ€” parents, siblings, children and nieces and nephews. The paid plans unlock a family tree with no generation limit and more storage.

How many members can I add?

There is no limit on the number of members on any plan. What differs is how far the family tree may be built: the Free plan covers parents, siblings, children and nieces and nephews, while the paid plans have no generation limit.

Family Tree & Members

5 questions

How many generations can I record?

The paid plans have no generation limit โ€” the system supports a family tree as deep as you can trace, and generation numbers are worked out automatically every time the structure changes. The Free plan covers three levels around you: parents, siblings, children and nieces and nephews. Downgrading deletes nothing; the part beyond the limit is hidden and returns when you subscribe again.

Do I need to enter each member's age?

No. You only need the date of birth โ€” the system works out the age automatically, every day. For a member who has passed away, enter the date of death and the system works out the age at which they died.

What if I only know the year of birth?

Enter an approximate date and tick "Only the year is known". The system will show the year alone, without a day and month, so no false precision is displayed.

Can a member have more than one spouse?

Yes. Each marriage is recorded as a separate record with its own dates and status. A member may have several marriages over a lifetime.

How many photos can I upload for each member?

Up to five photographs per member, plus a family gallery that is not limited by the number of pictures (only by your plan's storage quota).

QR & Scanning

3 questions

What is the difference between a Family QR and a Member QR?

A Family QR opens the family tree and the family details as a whole. A Member QR opens the profile of one particular member. Both are subject to the access level you set.

Can outsiders see my family details through the QR code?

Only if you set that code's access level to "Anyone who scans". The system default is "Family members only" โ€” an outsider who scans will see an access-denied message.

Can I design the QR code myself?

Yes. You can choose from five templates and six brand colours, place the family logo in the centre, and add a custom note beneath the code. The code can be downloaded as SVG for printing at any size.

Privacy & Security

4 questions

Who can see my family tree?

You decide. Every part โ€” the profile, the family tree, the gallery, the documents and the chat โ€” has its own privacy control with three choices: everyone, registered users, or family members only.

Is my family data sold to third parties?

No. We do not sell, rent or share your family data with any third party. Our revenue comes from subscriptions and from advertising that does not use your family's personal data.

How are sensitive documents protected?

A document can be marked confidential or private. A private document can only be opened by the related member and the family head, and every download is written to the audit log.

What is the Guardian role?

A guardian holds delegated access, not transferred ownership. The family head can let a parent manage a child's account, or a child manage an elderly parent's account โ€” by granting particular permissions only, from the nine available.

Pricing & Subscriptions

3 questions

Can I cancel my subscription?

Yes, at any time. Access lasts until the current subscription end date, then the account drops to the Free plan. Your data is not deleted โ€” the parts of the family tree and the files beyond the Free plan's limits are hidden, not removed, and come back in full when you subscribe again.

What happens when my storage is full?

New uploads are rejected until you delete old files or upgrade the plan. Existing data is neither deleted nor blocked. The storage quota belongs to each account, so files uploaded by other members of the same family do not reduce your remaining space.

Which payment methods are accepted?

Internet banking (FPX), credit and debit cards, and the major Malaysian e-wallets. Families in Indonesia, Singapore, Brunei and Thailand pay by international credit or debit card. All prices are in Malaysian Ringgit and are converted by your bank.

Technical & Apps

4 questions

Is there a mobile app?

Yes. NASAB is a Progressive Web App that installs straight from the browser on Android and iOS. Press "Install App" when the prompt appears, or use the "Add to Home Screen" menu.

Can I use the system without an internet connection?

Partly. Pages you have already opened in the mobile app can still be viewed offline. Adding or changing data requires a connection.

Can I export my family data?

Yes. You can export the member list, the document inventory and the event records to Excel, and generate a complete family tree book as a PDF at any time.

Can I join more than one family?

Yes. Many people join both their own family and their spouse's. The family switcher in the top bar lets you move between them.

Glossary

Family tree and lineage terms

Short meanings for the terms that come up most while putting a family tree together.

Family tree (salasilah)
The ordered descent of a family from its earliest known ancestor to the present generation, usually drawn as a branching chart. In a digital system, every person in the family tree is a record carrying its own dates, photographs and relationships.
Lineage (nasab)
Descent through a line of ancestry, particularly the paternal line in Malay and Islamic tradition. Lineage determines mahram relationships and is the basis for calculating the division of an estate.
Genealogy (silsilah)
A chain of descent recorded in generational order. "Silsilah" is the common term in Indonesia and "salasilah" in Malaysia and Brunei; both carry the same meaning.
Generation
One level in a family tree. NASAB numbers generations starting from the Root as the first generation, and that number is recalculated every time the shape of the tree changes.
Common ancestor
The nearest member who is an ancestor of two people. It is each person's distance from that common ancestor that determines the kinship term between them, such as cousin or uncle.
Faraid
The Islamic law governing the division of an estate according to each heir's relationship to the deceased. Accurate family tree records are needed to identify who is entitled.
Family QR code
A scannable code that opens the family tree when scanned. It can be printed on a name card, an event programme or a family gathering signboard.
