Online Faraid Calculator: How Estate Shares Are Worked Out

Short Answer

A faraid calculator works out each heir's share from the list of surviving heirs and the net value of the estate. It is a tool for understanding the likely division before dealing with the Syariah Court or Amanah Raya โ€” not a substitute for an official ruling, and not a fatwa.

Dividing an estate under faraid is a fixed calculation, but it rests entirely on one thing that is often unclear: who the eligible heirs actually are.

Why the lineage record comes first

A faraid calculator is only as good as the list of heirs put into it. A forgotten maternal half-sibling, a child from a first marriage, or a grandchild through a child who died earlier โ€” each of them changes the division. A family that has already recorded a complete lineage does not have to guess.

What the calculator needs

  • The gender of the deceased
  • The net value of the estate after debts, bequests and funeral expenses
  • The list of heirs alive on the date of death
  • Whether there is jointly acquired matrimonial property to be set aside first

Fractional arithmetic, not decimals

Faraid shares are fractions: a half, an eighth, two thirds. A calculation that converts them to decimals too early produces leftover cents that cannot be explained to the heirs โ€” and in an estate division, "RM3.47 missing" is a question that has to have an answer.

That is why the arithmetic is done in integer fractions from start to finish, and converted to ringgit only at the last step.

Disputed cases must be flagged

Some cases have no single answer agreed on across the schools of thought โ€” the musyarakah case, the standing of a grandfather alongside siblings, and the division when the shares total more than one (aul) are among the most frequent. Every such case must appear as a warning before the figures, not as a footnote beneath them.

This is a working tool, not an official ruling

The calculation helps a family understand the likely division and prepare before dealing with the authorities. It does not replace a Faraid Certificate from the Syariah Court, and it does not replace advice from a syariah officer or syarie lawyer.

Steps after the calculation

  1. Obtain a Faraid Certificate from the Syariah Court of the relevant state
  2. Refer to Amanah Raya Berhad for small estates, or the Land Office for immovable property
  3. Keep a copy of the official ruling in the family document archive so the next generation does not start over
